Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
