The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
